What To Do When You Turn 40

I think everyone should do something fun and crazy every once in awhile. Did I run the 1/2 marathon? YES!! But not on my actual birthday, it was actually a few days before. I ran it in 2:11:30, which is over 22 minutes faster than my first time running the 1/2. I'm running another 1/2 in September at Disneyland, and hope to beat 2 hours.

Just a reminder, the summer heat is here in Las Vegas in full force. Heat sensitive products like lip balm and lotion sticks have a high chance of partially or completely melting. Be careful out there!

The Sale Has Begun!!

The "I'm turning 40 and I'm going to run a 1/2 Marathon" sale has begun! That means that:

We are now officially closed. No orders will be processed until June 14, when we will reopen and orders will be processed in the order received;
All orders that come into the main website of $40 or more of merchandise will save 13.1 percent;
Facebook Fans (or is it "likers" now??) will get a special coupon code sent to their inbox for the SALE TO END ALL SALES!!
Choose the cheapest shipping option, if your order is heavy it will save you some $$$!!

Now the fine print: the coupon is only valid for in-stock items, there will be no backorders this time. Since I will be out of the country for most of the next week, I will not be able to update the website if I run out of something. If something you order is out of stock, the rest of your order will ship and you will receive a credit for the unshipped merchandise. Put a note in the comments if you have a second/third choice on your order. The coupon does not apply to shipping charges. Your order will be charged the day you place the order if you pay with credit card or PayPal. Use the Google Checkout if you don't want your card charged until after I return.

Also, I need to note that it is getting H O T here in Las Vegas. So the high-heat warning is in effect for lip balms and lotion sticks. If you want to OVERRIDE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, meaning no refunds if the product is melted when you get it, please leave me a comment when you order.

Longer Order Processing Time This Week

All orders placed prior to 11pm PST on May 9 have been shipped. I have to go out of town for a few days so new orders will not ship until Monday the 17th at the earliest. Unfortunately I will not have a chance to update my website before I leave.

Clean the World

I was looking for a way to support the Haiti relief effort, and I learned about this organization, Clean the World.

Right now, they are moving supplies into Haiti. Clean the World is concentrating on moving hygiene products and medical supplies into the Haiti Relief Effort. In partnership with Corporate Aviators Responding to Emergencies (CARE) and other shipping and international aid partners, Clean the World is providing assistance.

I went through my entire soap inventory today, and gathered scraps, test batches, and slow movers and loaded them up into 3 large flat rate boxes (totaling over 70 pounds, holy cow that's a lot of soap!!) for Clean the World. Would you like to help too? Clean the World is also accepting cash donations. The soap is being shipped to Florida, and they need additional donations for getting the soap from Florida to Haiti. They also have a YouTube channel named “HaitiReliefEffort” where you can watch their progress. I am very happy that my extra soaps will go to support such a worthy and potentially lifesaving cause. I must also admit I enjoy having the extra space as well!

New Shipping Charges Effective 01/01/2010

Happy 2010!

This is the first of a series of posts about all the changes that will take place during the coming year. This one is the first one I have to get out of the way, because unfortunately both UPS and USPS have both announced price increases. Future updates will be much more exciting, I promise!

After reviewing the price changes, it was obvious that I could no longer afford to offer the $6.00 priority mail flat rate charge. USPS has not only increased their prices across the board, but starting January 4, 1 pound packages will no longer have a flat rate throughout the US, but will become more expensive with zone pricing. Also, since USPS has introduced dimensional weight pricing (meaning the shipping is not only based on the weight of the package, but also on the size of the box), I have lost a lot of money on certain large orders. Not only is USPS increasing their prices, but so is UPS.

After careful consideration, I am going to change the priority mail option to actual pricing based on weight, plus $1.75 for insurance (if your order exceeds $50, I will cover the difference in insurance cost from USPS published rates). I am also introducing a Saver Shipping option, which will save you money on shipping for a larger order. The Saver Shipping will be a flat rate of $9.95 in the lower 48 states, and I will ship it the cheapest way (either USPS Priority or UPS Ground). You can expect to receive Saver Shipping by Priority Mail if your order fits into one of the flat rate boxes, and by UPS if it doesn't.

I have several new products in the works. I have started selling mini-soaps, which are not yet on my regular website but are now on Handmade by Randilyn on Etsy and ArtFire. Expect to see mini soaps in many more fragrances later this year, along with new lotion stick fragrances and much more!!

Pineapple Soap Back in Stock!

At long last, the Pineapple soap is back in stock! This fragrance has really been popular lately and it took me a bit by surprise. This batch is twice the size of my last one.

This soap was made with my tropical recipe featuring mango butter, macadamia nut oil, and kukui nut oil. It is one of my favorites and I'm so glad it's ready!! For our pineapple fanatics, we have pineapple lip balm too.

Hibiscus and Energy Soap Back in Stock!

I am happy to announce that our Hibiscus soap and Energy Soap are back in stock! The Hibiscus is pictured here, the Energy soap is a three-layer colored soap. I need to take a new picture and will post it soon.

I am so happy to announce that we can once again give you the option to choose Google Checkout when you make a purchase from our website!

Longtime customers may remember when we used to offer Google Checkout as a payment option when it first came out, but we could no longer offer it when our shopping cart provider decided to withdraw support for it. I never did turn the option off, though. Imagine my surprise when we received an order through Google Checkout today. Lo and behold, I double checked and it is back!!

Hopefully, this time Google Checkout is back for good.

Cucumber Melon Soap

The website has been updated to reflect new pricing for our handmade cold processed soap. Single bar pricing is $5.95.

We have increased our discount for 5+ bars of the same fragrance from 10% to over 15%. The new 5+ bar pricing is $5.00 per bar.

With our reduced shipping rates, you won't notice much of a change in your total, and if you order 10+ bars in one order you will most likely pay less than you did last year.

I want to announce several changes that will be effective just as soon as I finish reprogramming the shopping cart.

Our domestic Priority Mail prices are reduced to a flat rate of $6.00 per order! This includes all orders shipped within the USA, including Alaska, Hawaii, and military APO or FPO addresses. The USPS flat rate priority mail boxes have made this possible, so thank your friendly neighborhood mail man!

The price of all Dolphin Massagers will be reduced to $9.99 each!

There will be no changes in our lip balm, shower gel, or lotion stick prices.

There will be some price increases for soap and lotion. It has been 8 years since our last pricing adjustment, and the prices of some of the raw materials have more than doubled during that time. Tomorrow's post will detail those changes. For many orders, the reduction in shipping charges will more than offset the price increases of these products.

Show Announcement: The Lakes Festival of Lights Arts & Craft Show

I will be participating again in the Festival of Lights at the Lakes (in Las Vegas, NV). This is the show's 5th year, and my 3rd participating. This will be my last craft show of the year. If you wish to place an order for pick up, go to our website to order by Thursday the 11th and put "Festival of Lights Pickup" in the comments, select "Local Pick Up" as your shipping option, and we will have your order ready for you at the show! We will have show specials as well, so if you are in the area I hope you stop by! This show is getting bigger and better every year.

The Lakes Festival of Lights is a community event held behind Citibank on W. Sahara just west of Durango. It consists of a Craft Show, Car show, entertainment, food and fun. In the evening when it gets dark there is a lighted boat parade on the lake.

Show Announcement: Von's 4th Annual Craft Fair

On October 18 and 19 (Saturday and Sunday) from 10am-6pm, I will be participating in the Von's Craft Fair on Desert Inn and Durango (in Las Vegas). This is a fun, small fair sponsored by the Von's grocery store and benefits Breast Cancer research. The address is 8540 W Desert Inn Road. In past years there have been some AWESOME jewelry makers there, in addition to our soaps and toiletries. I will also have a large assortment of Aroma Ornaments with me!

This event is eligible for local pick up. Just make sure you get your order in by Thursday night and you can pick up your order either Saturday or Sunday for no delivery charge. On the website, just select the "local pick up" option and you will not be charged for shipping.

Oppose the FDA Globalization Act of 2008

While the FDA Globalization Act of 2008 is still in discussion draft form, it needs to be addressed NOW. For starters, it would require us to pay $2,000 per year to register our business, and for importing ingredients (like shea butter): another $10,000 per year. If passed as written, it will be the kiss of death to our small family-owned business.

Do you want to limit your choices of bath and body products to only those offered by the "big guys"? If you prefer to make your own choices about the skincare products you wish to use on your body, please take a few moments of your precious time to make your voice heard: visit the Indie Business Blog and sign the petition opposing this misguided legislation. I oppose it because it does nothing to enhance consumer safety, it will simply raise fees and require a lot of extra paperwork to be submitted to an already overburdened agency.

As I post new and unique items on Etsy, I will post updates here on the blog. I am featuring a $7.00 flat rate shipping via USPS Priority Mail, no matter how much you buy from the Etsy store.
